In order to create their bleak atmosphere the band does not tone down their instrumentation in terms of songwriting. While Into Darkness is very much a gloomy album, it can just as easily be argued that it incorporates a much more ambitious focus than its fellow colleagues. A trend in recent ages has seen a lot of bands run with the traditions doom metal and especially sludge, to incorporate the music into their sound and flare it up with rocking attitude such as Torche. It is only in 2011 to the rejoicing of fans accredited that the album was reissued for the world to hear.įor doom metal there are a select few directions to take the music, some take the path of the Candlemass and create epic, heavy metal worshipping soundscapes while others take the emotionally appealing approach of bands such as Warning and create desolate music. Releasing only one album in their short career, the band released to the world in very limited supply: a cd containing destruction, grooves and yes of course, bleakness. Here to satisfy those bleak, desolate, sorrow filled cravings you masochists die for is the all too appropriate band Winter. It is the that time of the year again, where the geese fly south, the leaves wither away and the doom metal is ripe for the listening. July 8, 2013: The Village Voice blogger Jason Roche lists Into Darkness as #14 in the top 20 hardcore & metal albums to come out of NYC. The album was re-released again, with no bonus tracks, by Southern Lord on April 12, 2011, on black and white vinyl as a gate fold LP with booklet. It was later re-issued by Nuclear Blast as a digipak with an altered front cover and the Eternal Frost EP as bonus tracks. The album was released in 1990 by Future Shock Records. Into Darkness is the first and only full-length album of American doom metal band Winter. They take their name from the Amebix song of the same name. Into Darkness has been re-released several times over the decades by those who tout it as a masterwork, but it's not.Winter is an American death/doom band from New York. There's a reason why other bands and works got the attention while this one vanished - those other bands were better, and made better music. Vocalist John Alman sounds bored, and his vocal lines just go on and on with no emphasis or any feeling - he sounds like he's just reading lines off a sheet of paper in a scary voice.ĭespite that some people line up to laud this as a lost classic just because it's obscure, it really is not very good. The songs just kind of thud along, with no build, no tension or emotion. Slow music can be tremendously affecting when it has compelling melody and atmosphere, which this does not really have. This is a dreadfully slow and pretty dull album of studious clunking riffs and deep gurgly vocals. Pioneering this may be, but it's not really all that awesome, and I don't think Winter can take much credit for popularizing the genre, as it was MDB and Paradise Lost that really broke big. Winter were one of the pioneers of Doom/Death, releasing this the same year as Paradise Lost's Lost Paradise and ahead of other seminal bands like Anathema and My Dying Bride by several years. This album was almost completely ignored when it was released, and hell, I only bought it because I ran across it used - I had no idea who the band was. Odd to get a promo of an album I've had for 20 years, of course I have the Future Shock release from 1990, and this is a remastered version from Southern Lord that's coming out this month.
